The Truth about Abia Governorship Election and the election petition tribunal Judgement

The Rotary International propagated a  four way test of what we think, say or do. The first among the others is to ask whether what you think, say or do is the truth.

What is the truth? somebody may ask. Truth is the way of freedom (John 8:32) and lasting knowledge, and an essential ingredient for socio-political cohesion and economic prosperity in society. For our society to be better in all ramifications, we should put truth into practice and radiate truth always in our lives and activities. If Abia State would ever be good or better than what it is today, we must seek the truth, embrace the truth and find a way of paying for the wrong doing.

It is on this note that I write to expound  the truth about Abia Governorship election held on April 11, 2015 and the election petition tribunal Judgement that upheld the election of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

That the election was keenly contested by the two major Political parties: PDP and APGA is a known fact. the two major candidates fought gallantly for the governorship position. There were scheming and schisms in the state. Ikpeazu exerted immense political leverage  on the power of incumbency of his political god-father T.A. Orji who took upon himself to do everything possible to return his anointed candidate whereas Otti depended on the goodwill of the people of Abia State who were solidly behind him. There were intimidation, and other actions to scare the masses from casting their votes. Despite, all these, people came out to cast their votes.

While Otti and his people believed that they would win the election based on the vote of the people, Okezie and Orji were busy planning on method of rigging that return their candidate  with the backing of INEC.

On the day of election, it was or record that Abia people never relented in voting for Otti in the three Senatorial zones of Abia North, Central and South. In Abia South, Ikpeazu's supporters threatened the voters with dangerous weapons hijacked all electoral materials from Obingwa and Osisioma LGAs. One of the TC Chairmen was caught by the military but immediately released by the intervention of the governor. Despite all these, Otti won the election. To subvert the truth, T.A.Orji and Okezie Ikpeazu quickly cooked results from Obingwa, Osisioma and Isialangwa north to claim victory. INEC allowed the cooked result to go through.

It was believed that the Election Petition Tribunal would be able to seek the truth and uphold the truth. Of course the truth was so glaring especially when a witness of the PDP claimed to have signed all the results from Osisioma LGA and other facts that would have called for a re-run in the three controversial LGAs. But the tribunal for a reason best known to them the tribunal, in its ruling, dismissed the petition of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate, Dr Alex Otti, for lack of merit.

Is this the truth? The answer is no. The tribunal knows the truth but decided to subvert the truth. The truth must prevail if Abia State must move forward. Whether Okezie or Otti would be the governor of Abia State, the truth must reign else Abia will remain in bondage. I am not against any candidate because all the contestants including myself are from Abia State and are well qualified to govern the state. But let the will of the masses prevail.
